An Interview of Ayako Sugai

Japan Women: Ayako Sugai was kind enough to let us interview her about her beautiful country Japan.

Where have you lived in Japan and what is that town or city like?

I have lived in Odawara. Odawara is comfortable to live in, I think. The climate is mild, and we still have a rich natural environment. My house is surrounded by rice fields. And also many vegetable and fruit fields are near my house. Yes, I have lived in countryside!

Where should non-Japanese visit in Japan and why?

I really recommend visiting Yokohama and Kamakura. There are so many sightseeing spots. Especially, I love Yamate in Yokohama. The night view is great! Also you can find many western style restaurants and the food is good.

In Kamakura, you can enjoy Japanese food. Tsurugaoka-hachimangu is very famous temple and a lot of people always gather there.

What else should non-Japanese see and do in Japan?

Please stay at a Ryokan, a Japanese style hotel. Try hot spring(onsen, or open air bath) and Japanese food. And you will always receive a hearty and friendly reception.

Is there any food that your recommend non-Japanese try while in Japan?

Ramen, sushi, and natto! Ramen is very popular in Japan, and comes in many flavors.(soy sauce, miso, salt, etc)

Probably foreigners dislike natto. The smell is bad, but natto is a very healthy food and please try it if you dare.

To you, what symbolizes Japan?

Japan is symbolized by Mt. Fuji, Tokyo tower, sumo, karate, and hot springs.

Ayako Sugai is the Assistant Manager of Kevin`s English Schools. Kevin`s English Schools.
