There are many sports you will know well in Japan and some including sumo, that you will not.

The Japanese love baseball, soccer, volleyball and then comes all the other sports.


Sumo

Is watched by older Japanese but only a few young people are interested in it. Some foreigners come to appreciate this interesting sport--including yours truly.

Sumo wrestling is an old Japanese tradition. Sumo has been performed the same way since the Edo Period (early 1600's) and still retains the rituals and techniques developed in those early years. Sumo wrestling, the ancient sport from Japan.

There is great scuba diving in Izu, just south of Odawara and Suruga Bay is world famous for the variety of fish it has, and for how deep it is yet so close to land.

More Marine Sports

If you enjoy marine sports, some of the beaches in the countryside are lovely, and not so crowded. Izu`s Shirahama Beach in Shimoda has white sand but is far from crowded in the summertime. It is a fun place to go for young people though to party, enjoy the sunshine and the ocean.

Enoshima is great for swimming and surfing--in fact all along the Shonan coast is famous for surfing.

Okinawa & Marine Sports

Is Japan`s Hawaii and has some amazing beaches, swimming and scuba diving. I really want to go there one day.

Ice Hockey in Japan

Japan has a rich and long history of playing ice hockey, and Japanese play it well. There is a pro league called the Asian League (AL), an annual tournament called the Nagano Cup,and Team Japan (men and women) routinely play other countries to prepare for the Olympics and the Asian Games.
